This film was made in response to Irish Biodiversity Week 2008 - it's simple knowledge I've learnt about managing a woodland to increase biodiversity.
This film is part of my ongoing work The Holly Wood Diaries, begun in 2008, documenting our conversion of our small Sitka spruce plantation to a mixed species, permanent forest, following close to nature forest management practice - see my blog www.ecoartnotebook.com
These sustainable forestry methods are more common in the EU but are yet not widely practised in Ireland. However, Ireland's urgent need for local fuel, its growing responsibilities to safeguard biodiversity, not to mention positive actions needed to address climate change, all suggest that permanent, mixed species forests will be increasingly important in ensuring Ireland's long term ecological and economic prosperity.
